Recently, fans were astounded when former actress Meghan Markle and her husband Prince Harry, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced that they and their 9-month-old son would be leaving their royal duties and living separately from the royal family. Although this is practically what Prince Harry had been doing for most of his young life, they received a lot of public backlash for formally taking this step. As a result, this has added extreme pressure to Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge. What caused this decision, and what will it mean for the Royal family?

After the announcement, Meghan Markle addressed the amount of stress that the media has inflicted on her. Harry has also said that he will “not be bullied into playing a game that killed my mum.” These remarks paint a picture of a couple questioning their ability to be effective royals due to intense media scrutiny. The royal duties that Harry and Meghan have abandoned will be taken up by the other royals, which probably means that Prince William and Kate will have a lot more on their plate.

Upon closer examination, it seems that this “scandal” just turned out to be a couple trying to redesign their lives to create a better one for themselves and their future children. Although it will be weird to not see Meghan and Harry out and about on royal duties, their lives are theirs to control and we shouldn’t be criticizing their personal decision.
