Old Spongebob vs New Spongebob: Why is old considered better? by Parker P.

As a fan of the show “SpongeBob Squarepants,” something I hear a lot is that old SpongeBob seasons will always be better than the new ones because all the new SpongeBob episodes are bad. Saying something is bad just because of a few bad episodes here and there, doesn’t really seem fair, does it? Well, let's dig deeper on that topic. Why is the new SpongeBob considered worse than the old?

As a fan of the show “SpongeBob Squarepants,” something I hear a lot is that old SpongeBob seasons will always be better than the new ones because all the new SpongeBob episodes are bad. Saying something is bad just because of a few bad episodes here and there, doesn’t really seem fair, does it? Well, let's dig deeper on that topic. Why is the new SpongeBob considered worse than the old?

Many early fans of the show SpongeBob Squarepants will always be biased towards the episodes they grew up with because of nostalgia. But is that the only reason fans think new SpongeBob is worse? No, there are many other reasons. The first reason is coming back to that word, ‘nostalgia.’ You may think referencing old episodes in new episodes would make old fans happy, right? Well, no. Many critics and fans, including me, think this is getting very annoying. They constantly reference old episodes, jokes, and even recycle entire plots. In season 11, this is where it started first happening. In season 12, it was a little more excessive. At the point SpongeBob is now, season 14, many plots and jokes have been recycled, and it makes you wonder if they have any new fresh ideas.

The second and last reason I’ll be talking about, and a main problem of this show, starting all the way back at season 4, is what SpongeBob fans call, “Squidward Torture.” These types of episodes have been milked to the ground, and no one knows why, as not a single person likes these episodes. They’re boring, repetitive, and all you do is feel bad for Squidward everytime. A normal Squidward Torture episode usually starts off with Squidward relaxing, and then SpongeBob and Patrick sneak into his house, Squidward yells at them, Sponge and Pat annoy Squidward more– it’s modern SpongeBob’s bread and butter at this point.

Fun Fact: This image is from the episode, “Boating Buddies,” an infamous Squidward Torture Episode.

After all this ranting, I think it would be best if we end this article on a high note. At the very least, SpongeBob still has some funny jokes thrown into the mix, and the animation is fabulous. Let’s hope that if SpongeBob continues to produce episodes, they can put a smile on everyone’s face, just like the old episodes did.

Just with new plots, and funny jokes.

Fact: This is Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob’s original creator. He was a marine biologist, and sadly passed away in 2018 due to a medical emergency. RIP Stephen Hillenburg.
