It’s that time! Last year, on October 3rd, the famous singer and songwriter Taylor Swift, released her newest hit, The Life of A Showgirl. At its release, the album broke multiple records and sold millions of albums in the first week. People are having different opinions towards it. Some say it’s her best album, while others say it’s her worst.

Did Taylor Swift hint at the album?

In the beginning, Taylor Swift vaguely hinted at this new album by including “Easter Eggs” in Instagram posts, such as a video of her coming back from the team’s 2-month break, in a stadium in Paris, showing her carrying  her cat, Olivia Benson, in her arms while having someone spin the camera around her and pass a sign with the number 12 on it in the background. Another hint at the album, was a specific but popular song in her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, called I Can Do it With a Broken Heart, which also highlighted the difficulties of going through 3 different breakups while still having to prepare for the tour. Taylor Swift then announced The Life of a Showgirl on her at-the-time- boyfriend Travis Kelce's podcast, New Heights. The podcast generally talks about football and the games, but for the announcement, Taylor made a surprise appearance. Right after, Travis Kelce proposed to Taylor, in a beautiful garden filled with flowers that was prepared in their backyard. After about a week, Taylor revealed the album picture, which was blurred during the podcast. Throughout the weeks, Taylor kept posting pictures with texts that hinted at song lyrics for the album. Soon after, a surprise The life of a Showgirl-themed Spotify pop-up  appeared in Manhattan, New York. The pop-up also hinted at different song lyrics as well, such as the lyrics, “They don’t make loyalty like they used to,” which is a memorable lyric from one of the album’s songs, “Father Figure.”

Sales and Chart Records

With The Life of A Showgirl, Taylor Swift managed to earn millions of dollars and break tons of records.

You might have heard of the singer Adele. In 2015, Adele broke the record for the most sales in the first week with her famous album 25. However, 10 years later (2025), Taylor Swift beat Adele by more than 1 million sales, now owning the world record. Taylor Swift managed to have around 4.002 million sales in just a week while Adele got 3.38 million.

Thinking virtually, all of The Life of A Showgirl album occupied ranks 1-12 in the top songs global music charts on Spotify along with all songs debuting on the Billboard Hot 100. Specifically, the song, “The Fate of Ophelia is spending its 10th week in the number 1 spot from early October 2025 to the middle of January 2026. (Take a look at how the song’s doing now! - Billboard Hot 100)

It’s not so hard to believe that Taylor Swift follows the historical band, The Beatles-who hold the record of spending 132 cumulative weeks in the Billboard 200 (albums) with 98 cumulative weeks in the Billboard 200, and Elvis Persely following Taylor, with 67 weeks. With this, Taylor Swift becomes the solo artist with the most cumulative weeks.

How the Public Feels

There are mixed opinions and reviews about the album.

Some reviews from listeners say that the album is amazing, but some others say it’s “garbage.”

On multiple articles and posts from websites, many share their view of the album. On Facebook, multiple posts state that the songs and overall album is amazing and that it’s fun and upbeat. On the other hand, some critics say the album lacks the profoundness in lyrics that her 6th, 7th, and 11th albums,  folklore, evermore, and

The Tortured Poets Department  had. Though the lyrics in her new album may not be as excellent, the actual music brings yet another pop of color to her career.

Even though the album is fun and upbeat, not only do some casual listeners somewhat dislike the album, some of Taylor Swift’s own fans expected something more from the songs. Articles, videos, and daily conversations of fans say that they were able to personally connect to Taylor Swift’s songs about her life with their own. But when fans listened to The Life of A Showgirl, they say that the album was too predictable and was missing the connection the songs always had with them.

Soon after the album was released, Taylor Swift announced she would be showing a movie in theatres, that played all of the new album’s songs with lyrics, background information about the songs, and for the first time, the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia” along with the making of it. Loads of people went, and so many loved it, but some were disappointed by the movie, saying they expected more than just listening to the songs and watching a music video when soon after the three showcasing days of the movie, Taylor Swift released the same background information about the songs shown in the movie, on Spotify, right after releasing the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia” on YouTube.

Some fans predicted a part two of the album, seeing that there were only 12 songs, and that her past two albums, Midnights and The Tortured Poets Department, had extra songs come out at 3 and 2 AM. But, when Taylor Swift didn’t come out with another part, some fans were disappointed.

However, there is a bright side to the album. Many fans and reviewers loved the reference to the Shakespearean character from Hamlet, Ophelia. The song and music video reimagines the character as being able to be saved from “drowning” in past heartbreaks through self-reclamation and a new relationship. Early in the music video, Swift is shown posing as Friedrich Heyser's famous 1900 Ophelia painting. Because of this, fans are swarming to the Museum Wiesbaden in Germany just to get a glimpse of the original art. Overall, Taylor Swift has come out with an amazing album and it still deserves every drop of praise it receives.

What does the album represent?

Though the answer might be quite obvious to some by the title, it’s actually deeper than that.

The album tells the story of how Taylor Swift became the superstar she is, her achievements, and all of the things she had to get through to accomplish that dream of hers, For example, her song, “Father Figureis about the conflict with Scott Borchetta, the founder of Big Machine Records, and the person who sold all of Taylor Swift’s first six albums to Scooter Braun, for 300 million dollars, without any of Swift’s consent. Once sold, Braun denied Taylor Swift permission to buy her master’s back, leading to Taylor having to re-record 4 of her masters. Years later, after the release of her album, The Tortured Poets Department, she bought back all her albums, and wrote the song “Father Figure”.

In general, the album is mostly about the feelings and exhaustion that her latest tour, The Eras Tour, has caused her, her relationship with her now-fiancé, Travis Kelce, and the excitement about getting married for the first time, which seemed to be one of her dreams, along with becoming a star. Taylor Swift wrote this album while performing almost every day on her Eras Tour, -the highest-grossing tour in history that grossed over 2.7 billion dollars in total, made about 10.17 million dollars on only ticket sales, that lasted for almost 2 years, and travelled to 5 different continents-so that’s why most of the songs are about the hardships of being on tour.
