This year’s Oscars on February 9th at 8:00 focused more on the female and minority actors and directors than previous years. Parasite won the Best Picture of the Year, making history as the first best picture that isn’t in English. It also won the Best Foreign Language Film and the director, Bong Joon-ho, won both Best Original Screenplay and Best Director. He beat top directors such as Sam Mendes and Martin Scorsese. Joaquin Phoenix and Reneé Zellweger won for Best Actor and Actress for the Joker and Judy, respectively. Netflix’s night was not as productive, and lost multiple Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Director. Natalie Portman made a large statement on the red carpet, wearing a cape around her neck, with the snubbed female directors sewn in along the sides. The event was beautiful and stunning, especially when the first female conductor performed at the Oscars, moving many of the audience members.
